Maintainers
There is no CODEOWNERS file in this repository, so this page is derived from git log history (default branch master) since 2023. Use it as a starting point for "who would know about X" — the people whose names appear most for a given subsystem are the ones most likely to be the right reviewers or first responders.
Bot-like accounts are excluded; everyone listed here is a person.

How review works
PRs against this repo go through one or more of the people above. The pattern that's emerged since the GitHub-issue migration:
- Build / process — Andrew Clayton, Aleksei Bavshin
- QUIC + HTTP/3 — Roman Arutyunyan or Sergey Kandaurov
- OpenSSL / TLS — Sergey Kandaurov
- Upstream + load balancing — Roman Arutyunyan
- General HTTP — any of the top three
For routine fixes, expect an @nginx/maintainers-style triage assignment within a few days. Substantial changes go through more than one reviewer.
Historical note
Igor Sysoev (the original author, ~3,683 historical commits) retired from active development around 2017 and is no longer in the contributor list. Maxim Dounin was the de-facto lead through 2023 and largely stopped contributing here in early 2024 after announcing the freenginx fork. The repository has since stabilized around Sergey Kandaurov and Roman Arutyunyan as the most active maintainers, with Andrew Clayton and Aleksei Bavshin handling much of the GitHub-process and build-system work.
